Chair Yoga
Seated movement and supported standing poses using a sturdy chair. No need to get down to the floor.
Lower intensity
Gentle yoga is a slower, lower-intensity practice. Poses are held with support, transitions are kept to a minimum and there is time to rest between movements. The aim is comfortable, mindful movement rather than effort or achievement.
This class is a good fit if you prefer a calmer practice, are newer to exercise, or simply want a class that feels kind on the body. It is still a physical activity, so the usual guidance about practising within your limits applies.
What to expect
Finding a comfortable seated or lying position.
Small movements for the neck, shoulders, spine, hips and ankles.
A few poses held with props, with time to adjust.
A guided relaxation in whatever position is most comfortable.

Practical details
You will need
Helpful but optional
Gentle classes are live on Zoom. Joining details are emailed 24 hours before class.
Every pose can be adapted. You might work seated rather than kneeling, keep a chair nearby for standing poses, or rest whenever you need to. Our article on gentle modifications explains some common options.
"Gentle" does not mean every movement suits everyone. If you have a health condition, an injury or balance problems, talk to a healthcare professional about how to adapt your activity, and let us know about any modifications you need.
Questions
Beginner classes teach the foundations of yoga and gradually build a flowing practice. Gentle classes stay slow and supported throughout, with longer rests. Many beginners enjoy both.
It may be, but please check with a healthcare professional first. Yoga teachers cannot assess whether a particular activity is right for your condition.
Most of the class is on the floor, but you are welcome to follow seated in a chair. If floor work is difficult for you, chair yoga may suit you better.
